Thoughts on VA Tech

Hello,

I have two things I want to talk about....the Virginia Tech shooting and the Imus thing. I think I'll write about the Virginia Tech tragedy first since it weighs a bit more heavily now.

First off, my heart goes out to the victims and their families. When I think about all of the peoples lives who were effected, it's nauseating. When I think about the loss to society, it's just overwhelming. Actually, it's fucking sickening and it sucks. It's something that words can't convey. My writing about it is not meant to be insensitive or to promote an agenda. It's just meant to reflect on some points that I feel are important and that I feel have been lost in the confusion of it all.

In the first day of this, I kept saying, and I said to some of you, that I hope this didn't turn into a second amendment issue. In the respect of either being for or against the right to bear arms. That's not what this is about. Yes, there are gun law issues on both sides, but ultimately, this is not a case that really should be used as a good example for either side. It was a tragedy. Let's remember that, first off. We can sit around and say if guns weren't accessible then it wouldn't have happened, or if they were more accessible, then this the students could have protected themselves. Even though I'm completely FOR the right to bear arms, it is all moot. It happened, and it's shitty. Let's not use it to promote agendas. Sure we can use it to learn, but not to promote agendas, and as far as learning, it could have unfolded so many ways. I mean the screening process could have better to prevent this guy from getting a gun, but give me 100 bucks, a piece of duct tape, and a chewed piece of bubble gum, and I can get a gun for you before I finish this blog. If the student's in the building had guns, they could have killed the killer or they could have been shot the night before at a party when some idiot got drunk and went through their shit (and those of you who went through my shit in college fuck you. STEVE you know who you are)....let's not argue about it.

The second thing I want to say is that a professor from Northeastern University weighed in on a lot of this. He's a criminal justice prof. by the name of James Allen Fox. And he made a very good point.....The media kept a tally count. Showing that this was the biggest mass killing spree on a campus. Almost glorifying the situation; if not simply making it something to beat. That's fucked up. I mean, it was like with the increased tally, they got a bigger hard on. Now, I hate news anchors to begin with , and I'll get into that later, like I will about HR and Imus, but it's a good point. It definitely sensationalized this and made it more about the killer, and about the "records" than it was about the simply reporting of the story. How bad will it be next time? Will the killer try for 35?

Third, Mr. Fox also mentioned that when something like this happens and the killer kills himself, people are left with no none to be upset with. They have no where to direct their anger, and that's true.....instead, they are left blaming the police, the laws, and the sound system at VA tech. This is a valid point. Instead of focusing on the court date and putting this guy away, they focus on this. I have to say though it is difficult to point fingers, and I don't want to do that. I do think there's some blame to put out....1) the killer. this is all his fault. 2) and this is sooooo much lighter than the prior culpability just mentioned, but I mention it just because it seems like a point that everyone missed....After the initial shooting, everyone said that it seemed to be isolated and they shouldn't disrupt 26000 other people. I understand that, and it would make perfect sense if they knew who the fuck went into a dorm and killed two fucking students! All they had were bodies. No killer. When you have a killer on the loose and two students on a campus shot dead, there should be a lock down until things are safe. I mean it was on a campus, not just in a town where things would be in a more random pattern. If there were a shooting in a huge hi rise office building and they couldn't evacuate the thousands of people, I think they wouldn't just be like "go about your day, we don't want to disrupt your business". I think they would say, "stay put until we know why two people are dead". Now, that said, I don't think it was a cause for the additional shooting. It may have helped PREVENT the shootings, but they weren't at fault for it. The only person who is at fault for the death is the damn killer and that's it. If you haven't noticed, I haven't used his name. He doesn't deserve it. He took 32 lives; all of whom are more significant than he and until their names are spoken individually more than the killers, I won't say his name. But at this point, giving him a name and identity I feel is almost disrespectful to the 24 people whose names have not been spoken at this point.

The last point is that in the days after the tragedy, there were reports and "special news stories" about mass killings. These weren't to help with processing of this event. These were for ratings. They were reporting on things that happened, in some cases, about 100 years ago. They were put on the air to tag onto the the horror of the situation and get ratings. That's fucked. I don't care if they can disguise it by saying that now it meant something or it was to help people understand. The media was capitalizing on the people's new interest in how something so horrible could happen, and they took the opportunity to sensationalize it. If these stores from 100 years ago weren't news two weeks prior to the shooting at VA tech, they are not now. We don't need a recount of additional massacre now that there's fear in the situation. Did anyone notice that a lot of the evening news headlines (at least in the Boston area) were "massacre on campus" even days after the initial shootings? Do we think that was just to talk about what happened at VA tech, or was it to insight more fear in that it could have been a new story about any campus in the area after the initial tragedy? Personally, after hearing so much coverage about the situation, when they used the generic term "campus" I thought it happened again, and it made me look up. Do you think that was coincidental, or meant to excite attention? I think the latter rather the former. That's why I hate news broad casts. When anchors report on horrible things, (in some cases) they are almost more excited that something horrible has happened than they are if it hadn't. I have to say that in one account in Boston, the reporter started to break down at the end of a report when a mother found out that her child had died at VA Tech. That exhibition of feeling I found to be caring and respectful, but it was probably more visceral than was supposed to be. The writer of the story probably thought that wouldn't happen, but it just pushed the boundaries so much that this reporter broke down. As far as things go generally, most reports are disgusting. Think about all of the news you see an a daily basis that's not "news". It's just sensationalizing the worst day of someones life. If I'm wrong here, why does CT news break in during a television show because there was a "deadly crash" on a highway in CT. It's not to prevent traffic. It's to peak the attention of the viewers at home who are waiting for their fathers, mothers, wives and husbands to get home from work after being late. It's to get them to "tune in for more breaking news at 6:00". It's not fucking news! It's death and the worst times of people's lives that should be respected and private. NOT on the air for everyone to gawk at for fuck's sake .......sorry about that tangential rant to this situation. I wrote about it because it tied into the sensationalism I saw with the VA Tech massacre that was disrespectful.

All of that said, I hope this gives respect to the situation, and maybe some rationality to things that should be questioned as well. If not, I'm deeply sorry for writing. This post isn't for entertainment. It's for thought. Please post if you feel inclined.

I'm sorry for the lives that were cut short.

Peace.

I gots the cooties!!!!

Sup,

I've been away for a bit. I've been puking my brains out for the past couple of days. I haven't been this sick in a years. I think it's all of the damn anti-bacterial soap out there. Now, many places have little pumps in the hall way that spit out tiny piles of lifesaving foam that people can put on their hands to ward of the evil spirits that live on door knobs, hand shakes, and in the air. Thank the lord for that shit. With out it, I don't think we'd be able to live as a fearful society who feels safe because we're doing something to fight off the fucking bird flu. Watch, just because I said that, I'll be the first mother fucker to get it in the US. Three interesting points about this germophobia stuff though 1) regular soap and water is anti bacterial 2) some natural bacteria actually keeps you healthy. It's called comensal bacteria and it's part of our innate immune response. Killing that can actually help make you sick. 3) going overboard with this stuff can help cause resistance in some bacteria....making a fucked up strain that can kick me on my ass and make me puke up Flintstones chewable vitamins that I ate back when I was seven.

By the way, the Sox just hit four home runs in a row...first time in team history.

Anyway, that said. I hate all of this germophobia. By the way, next time you shake my hand, remember, I just scratched my balls after making mud castles out of dog shit. Better wash up.

One last thing for tonight. I just wanted to thank the last person who posted and left the link to the article about the response to Imus being fired. I thought it was very insightful and interesting. It's definitely worth a read.

Where's Capitalism at the park?

Whhaaaad up. So In my post about the Red Sox, I said that the beers at the game were 6 bucks. Well, after going to the game on Friday night I have to write a retraction. I was wrong. That was lat year's price. This year they go for 7 bucks for a bud light! And if you want a "premium" beer, it is 7.75. That's some crazy shit. That was enough to make me feel stooopid for buying one beer for what you would pay for a six pack.....I didn't drink much. Plus I wanted to enjoy the game and not be hammered. However, we did want a couple of beers during the game. At the top of the 3rd, we decided to take a piss and get a couple of beers. So as we were in line trying to get a beer, I noticed that it was moving along at an ok pace. That's when I noticed the blue and white beer tap. I looked at the letters on the tap the guy was pulling to make beer magically flow from the spout like a golden, amber wave of glory. I couldn't wait for a beer......but then it happened. I noticed that it was miller lite. I will not drink miller lite because they support illegal immigration. (that's what I heard on a radio show I listen to. I trust the source, and for that reason, I will NEVER drink a miller product).

Anyway, after I told my girlfriend that I was very sorry for making us miss more of the game and that I had to move to another beer line based on principal, we headed over to a red and white striped awing that read "beer and nuts". I figured that it wouldn't be too long until we had our bees in had an we able to make it back to our seats. She went over to get a bag of popcorn, and I waited in line. I waited and then she was back with the popcorn a couple of minutes later. I hadn't moved, but a couple of people gathered behind me to wait for a beer too. Minutes passed. The bag of popcorn dwindled. I turned and noticed that the Angles scored a run. From the same TV screen, I saw Manny get up twice. I was about to just go back to my seat so I could watch the game we had paid an arm and a leg to see, but I thought, it's just not right to leave the line after the time I've invested already. I decided to make a go for it and commit to not leaving the line under any circumstance (unless of course Wally the mascot was handing out free beers a few feet away).

I began to hear the guys behind me start to complain about the line. I started complaining to my girlfriend. I started saying "what the fuck! I just want a beer. All they have to do is pull the little lever and beer will come out. It's not that difficult. Why the hell isn't the line moving faster". I watched a guy, in his 50s, start walking up to the front of the line, and the guys behind me without hesitation started to yell at him to get the back of the line. I wasn't sure if he was trying to cut, but I'm glad they said something before I had to. There's no reason to cut in line in this situation. It's just not right. Everyone want's their beer to get back to the game. After this point, the people in front of me, the guys behind me, and we were getting frustrated. I finally saw the line in front of me melt away slowly. And then it was my turn! I had my ID ready and money in hand. I could still hear people in the back of the line complaining about the wait. Then I looked down at the guy puring the beer...... He had one arm! Son of a Bitch! I felt like a jack ass, and I heard the comments behind me fade away when they noticed the same thing. But i was also thinking.....ya think Arrowmark (the company who charges the 7 bucks per beer and who runs the concessions at Fenway and many parks in the country ) could pay the extra money to get a two armed beer vendor......I'm kidding. Its actually was impressive to see him work as quickly as most of the beer vendors while being polite too. I mean, the fact that he kept shooting the shit with the other guy behind the counter who wasn't doing anything probably slowed him down too. That was just the thought in my head at the time; not to be a retarded douch bag(for pres).

At any rate, we made it back in the 5th inning and the sox ended up kicking the snot out of the Angels. Oh and we knew they were going to win from the 8th on, but we wouldn't leave even though they were sure to win.....it's just not right. At any rate, the final score made my beer wait better. I just thought I'd put that out there. If you want a beer, just check the guy pouring first. If he's a chatty- one-armed beer pourer, get in a different line!

And a comment on the price of beer at sporting events. It seems messed up that they charge so much for one beer. If the park would let people bring in beverages like they do in NASCAR, that would never happen. Since the parks don't let beer in and they have an exclusive deal with one vendor, they can charge anything they want. Now maybe I'm getting old, but the prices now are so absurd that my beer purchases have definitely been affected. Hopefully that will carry through all of the fans and they will lower their prices to move more volume. I doubt it, but we'll see. In the mean time; Play ball, and enjoy beer if you can.

Vodka, Ginger, and cranberry

Hello,

I just wanted to thank those of you who have come to the site since I sent out the gratuitous email asking people to check this out. I wanted to let everyone know that anyone who is here can post a comment about any blog topic or anything in general by clicking on the comments section found at the end of each post. I welcome more thought no matter what you have to say. I'm just glad that you have taken the time to read what I have here. Also, the video clips I have on the right hand side of the posts.....right now, there are three or four different band videos. However, a single group of videos from a particular band is shown at a time. If you notice, they will scroll though automatically to show all featured videos. These are videos of bands that I appreciate and can find clips of.....I won't put on bands that suck, or at least I won't think they suck. From time to time, there may also be clips that aren't music. They may be of a variety of topics so feel free to check them out. Oh and the name of this post is what I was drinking when I wrote it.

Keep an eye peeled. I have had a rant in the works about the "Imus" story, but with everything that has been said, I'm not sure if there's a lot of interest. I've been glued (not literally) to the TV and radio about this just because it interests me a tremendous amount. Instead, I may also choose to post about the lack of quality in ball hair transplants. Stay tuned.........

When I say Red Sawx You Say.....

This blog comes with opening day at Fenway. I love the Sox, and I love Boston, but I have to say that I do have a problem with some issues surrounding the red sox. I know I know….it sounds bad especially that my girlfriend and I have tickets for Friday’s game (for which I’m psyched). However, what I want to talk about is simply something that comes from some of the things that come with being in the greatest baseball city in the world…….

First off: the news. Now I’m not a fan of news anchors to begin with. Most news anchors are retarded douche bags (that for pres), and they don’t really give a shit about the team, but they sit there and have ridiculous banter about how excited they are for the red sox. It doesn’t even seem real most of the time. It’s just corny and annoying. Form there, they have peripheral stories where they’ll have stuff like “ticket scalping!” Ohhh who gives a shit? That’s how most people around here can actually get a damn ticket most of the time. And for people who live in the city, the games are great if you can get tickets……but most of the time, you can’t. We are just stuck without tickets like everyone else. With out the ability to get them without sitting on line for four hours to get a game on April 13th against LAA. (For the Yankees, that’s a separate waiting day). Also, the tickets we got cost us 90 bucks for OK seats! (as I’m sure all of you have experienced) That’s almost $100 just to see the inside of the ballpark. And then we have $6 bucks a beer $4-5 for a hot dog…and so on. Plus if we want to bypass the lines at the T and the Bus, we have to pay another $90 for parking! Ok……everyone has to deal with that. However, as a Boston resident we have the additional cost plus the hassle of having to get home from work later in the day because of the traffic on the T and the Pike that happens with every home game. We have to deal with out of town drunk people in the city hanging around, and the additional college kid who likes to think he was the first reds sox fan in the history of baseball, and we have the added pleasure of paying for the police who aren’t out here patrolling to combat our increasingly high murder rate, but who are out here fighting scalpers, dealing with traffic, and arresting the rowdy sports fan who gets out of hand………..

That said, I’m not saying I don’t love the Red Sox, or that I’m the biggest fan either. I was a late bloomer, and it wasn’t until Shawn, Mitch and Tom came up during my college years to take me to a game when I realized the magnetic passion of the sport. It was then when I began to love the Sawx (affectionately spoken). Shortly thereafter, I realized I loved my girlfriend (the girl I’m living with now) when she (a Yankees fan at the time before I converted her) brought pizza and caffenated beer to my studio apartment throughout the post season of 2004 because I couldn’t leave my place after haven seen the sox come back against the Yankoffs after being down 4-0. She knew that the only way to get my attention was to be with me in my apartment during that tumultuous time. If I left the exact room I was in when they started winning it would cause their streak to crumble……That’s how being a fan goes. I really hope they don’t mount a comeback this year after I see them playing while I’m getting my nutz waxed.

At any rate, we love the Red Sox, and hate the Yankees. We love the excitement, the stories that surround the red sox, and the history and passion of the team. All I’m saying is that it has become frustrating to hear the fake news anchors and to deal with the surrounding problems with the game. Plus, not being able to get a ticket just to see a game at the park down the street or needing to have to plan a mini vacation to have a seat at the game is frustrating (I mean some hotels in the area plan destination vacations surrounding getting tickets to a Sox game, and competing with people who have the money for that becomes exclusive), but all in all…….I guess it is a truly unique experience. We’re lucky to be around a team like this; to live around the excitement of the park in its purity is something to cause reflection. To see it when you’re walking to have a drink on a quiet Wednesday night on a late November evening is amazing, and I’m lucky for that. That’s the time the spirit is at it’s best; without the rest of the responsibility that comes with living next to the most electric baseball park of all time. When you can feel the overwhelming awe of the season past by looking up at the green gates and brick walls of the immense structure of Fenway park you know that it’s something more. At this moment, you can embrace the faint echo of all the excitement held by the past season and past generations of baseball fans and you are able to envision how that will spill into the future of baseball. It’s quiet on the outside, but stirs with a ringing in your ears and in your heart that lets you know baseball is alive and that you’re a lucky to be a Bostonian.

Chicken ballz

What’s up. I think this will be a quick post. I’m at work right now, and I hate it, so I figured I’d drop a quick line. Actually, if I just sit here and look at porn, maybe I can get fired…hmmm. Tempting. So I was listening to the radio the other day and I noticed an increased amount of people using the word “literally” when the speaker is being anything but literal. I fucking hate that. Just because you say “literally” doesn’t make something more amazing or believable. For example: When I heard the retarded douche bag on the radio use literally in an inappropriate manner, I literally jumped out of my seat. Now, we all know I didn’t do this. I don’t jump. And it just makes me sound like a moron because I’m being contradictory. I’m saying it really happened, but it, in fact, did not. Just sounds wiked retaaaded dude. So anyone who is guilty of this practice, fucking, cut it out. Thanks.
